Mayor Tom's Speech

A lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-yous about Lexington Field, Music, and San Diego

Grumpier than Usual

May 19th, 2012

As Beau so kindly stated in our recent Lexington Field Newsletter; I have been much grumpier than usual and not because of work or because of married life and certainly not because I have put on a few pounds recently … in the words of Jack Black, “I like to eat, is that a crime?”

For those that read our Face Book posts may have read about my recent knee surgery. I figured I should write-something explaining what has become the quintessential story of my life. I am broken, weak like a little baby bird, slow and useless on a soccer field … simply put, I sweat watching TV!!!

On September 27th last year I turned 31 years old … On January 27th of this year I got married … On February F’ing 1st, I tore my ACL for the 4th F’ing time in the same freaking knee!!! YES YES, I tore my ACL a 4th time on my honeymoon! Now I’d like to insert a crazy story explaining how my wife I were in the middle of a kinky sexual maneuver which subsequently resulted in my injury but I’d be lying! The sexual positions we use must be practiced again and again to avoid injury; needless to say we are well rehearsed in that field so y’all don’t have to worry!

I tore my ACL when a drunken idiot at the hotel in Jamaica bumped me off a ledge causing me to fall (waste-high) down awkwardly on my bad knee snapping it like a toothpick! This happened 2 days into our 10-day trip making it difficult to enjoy our honeymoon! I did have the privilege of spending an entire day in a Jamaican Hospital, which makes Kaiser look like the Ritz Carlton!

To make a long story short, I had to have 2 surgeries to repair the damage. Surgery #1 was on May 1st; the doctor removed 4 screws from my knee along with a bunch of scar tissue and meniscus. He also filled giant holes in my knee (caused by the screws which were removed) with bone, which was taken from my Hip. The 2nd surgery will be the actual ACL reconstruction surgery, which will take place at the end of the year. During that surgery, they will take a ligament from a dead person and use it in my body … pretty crazy stuff!!!!

I’ll be in rehab 2x a week for the next 6 months strengthening my leg and then I will have the other surgery, which has a 6-8 month recovery time as well.

I have been in pain and I have been VERY grumpy which Beau so kindly pointed out. I just wanted you all to know why …

The good news … things are moving along nicely which means that I will be back in no time working long hours at the bank, rocking great Lexington Field shows and performing those impressive sexual maneuvers I eluded to above!

I cannot wait to see you at our next show, which so happens to be next weekend at the Belly Up Tavern (My Favorite Venue) alongside Cash’d Out!

Sir Captain Jones: The Man, The Song, The Legend

April 20th, 2012

Sir Captain Jones

Talk about a once in a life time chance…to be the star of your band’s music video.  Sounds like a joke, right, the lead is the bass player???  But due to my costume advantages (and the song was written about me), I got the part.  If it is even half as funny as it was fun to film it will be a video loved by everyone.  I’ve already heard it being called a classic.

The song was written by our guitar player Bryan, playing something super “Nickelback-y” with rad lyrics and Beau gave him that “WTF” look and we started working on it tucked up in our remote practice space.  Bryan then came up with the intro after a few tough hours, then the song just played itself out.  Cami had built this violin melody that just made me feel like I was in a boat, battling a storm while the kracken was trying to bring down my ship.  If you guys don’t know, Beau and Bryan switched it up, where Beau is on electric ripping a super cool octave riff and Bryan hammers away like Joe Strummer on the acoustic .  The rhythm is driven by Vince’s slammin’ drum making which makes the bass pop.  It was the interlude that made me just love the song.  The melody slowed down putting me in slow motion, I got to get a little funky on the bass and Beau got to palm mute that huge build up which is a big deal for him (he’s always on acoustic and doesn’t get to do cool palm mute riffs).  Then we jammed it out loud before going back into the song.

That was just making the song.  We then decided to make it our music video.  First release on our new EP Poor Troubled Life.  I’m  just going to sum it up quick…awesome…jumping in a freezing pool…the freezing ocean…waking up at 5 AM…building the stage you see us rock out on and various other problems…I even threw up getting off the boat…land sickness, I don’t know ???  It was so much fun and would love to do it forever.  There is nothing better than being on a boat with your best buds and being a total ass!

It was an awesome time making this song and video for your eyes and ears.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did and laugh as hard as we do every time we watch it!

New Music Video!!!

April 16th, 2012

Have you seen the new music video from Lexington Field? Well, if you haven’t, then it is time to check it out. We just released it April 11, 2012! It is an amazing video produced and edited by our friends, Miles, Trevor, Derek, Matt, Terri, Ruth, and Jess, and of course ‘the hooligan’, our very own bass player, Casey Jones! I really didn’t know what to expect from this music video, but I was highly impressed by the whole thing. Considering that from the get go, things were a bit harry. It started out pretty rough when we found out the morning we were supposed to shoot the video that we had half the time allotted that was originally negotiated and had to quickly get the band shots. However…. with Miles and Trevor handling the cameras, we were able to get a number of takes and complete it in the short time we were given.

Captain Jones & Jess

I, unfortunately did not have the privilege of partaking in the rest of the video shooting, but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. Miles and Trevor really worked their magic with setting up the cameras for the pool and bay shots, hilarious by the way. And Beau, Vince, and others helped set the scene and story for the video. Great job by all of you! And of course we cannot forget about the main characters, Casey Jones and Jess. They both really pulled it off and acted quite perfectly for their roles portrayed in the video. I especially enjoyed the Titanic scene with a twist. That apparently was tricky to film because from what I hear Vince rowed Miles up in a small boat with the camera moving around all over the place, but luckily did not end up in the water. One of my favorite parts of the video is when the pool man drinks the pool cleaner and spits it up in the air, once again very silly and funny! I think the best part is that it is Casey doing all this and he does it very well.

The end result of this music video turned out quite amazing. I was very pleased with the color and clear picture that came through and all the great shots of each band member. I look forward to the next music video. They continue to improve and really portray Lexington Field music!!! Thank you to everyone that participated in the forefront and behind the scenes!

We are playing at the Tin Can Alehouse on Thursday, April 19 with Decker, Heavy Glow, and V-Draco so check it out! This will be a new venue for Lexington Field. We look forward to the show. See you there!
